Don’t Let Dental Anxiety Rule Your Life

Did you know that about 40 million Americans suffer from dental anxiety? Sadly, this anxiety can make some people hesitant to visit the dentist. However, avoiding the dentist can be detrimental to your oral health, especially over time. Fortunately, there are a few things you could do to overcome this anxiety, including sedation dentistry.

For many patients, our team could recommend nitrous oxide, which is often referred to as laughing gas. This form of sedation dentistry is a viable option for both children and adults. This is an extremely popular option because laughing gas has few side effects and wears off quickly after treatment. If you use laughing gas, you probably won’t fall asleep, but you will be in a relaxed state for your treatment.

Oral sedation dentistry could also help. If you choose this option, you’ll take an oral medication before you come for your visit in order to be fully relaxed before treatment. However, please note that if you choose this form of sedation, you won’t be able to drive yourself home, as the effects can take more time to wear off.

We could also suggest IV sedation—though this option is typically reserved for cases of more severe anxiety. As with oral sedation, note that you will need to arrange a ride home. You see, the effects of IV sedation won’t wear off as quickly as a sedation option like nitrous oxide.
