Fear of the Dentist and Dental Sedation

Posted August 22, 2016

Are you afraid of the dentist? As you probably know, many people suffer from similar concerns about visiting the dentist. In fact, nearly half of all Americans have some type of dental anxiety. Fortunately, there are a few things you can consider to help you deal with your anxiety. One option we recommend is dental sedation.

However, there are a few different levels of sedation you should know about. For example, you could consider conscious sedation. As you’ve probably guessed, with this type of sedation you’ll be able to respond to our dentists verbally and physically. There may be instances when this form of sedation won’t be enough. If this is the case, you may still need minimal sedation. Fortunately, if this type of sedation is chosen for you, you’ll still be able to respond to our team. However, please note that if this is the best solution for you, your coordination will probably be impaired.

Still, if these solutions aren’t enough, you could need stronger sedation. With stronger forms of sedation, you’ll still be able to respond to our team’s verbal requests, but probably not physical ones. Still, if stronger forms of sedation are necessary, you may be able to respond to stimulation, but will probably be in a deep sleep.

However, please note that not everyone is a good candidate for dental sedation. If you’re interested in sedation, we recommend speaking to our team. We will gladly answer any of the questions you may have. If you have any more questions, or would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Vellequette and Dr. Fung, please don’t hesitate to contact Smile Center Silicon Valley at 408-245-7500.
