Tooth Extractions
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. At Smile Center Silicon Valley, our dentist may pull the tooth to make room for the other teeth or, in some cases, to relieve pain or prevent the spread of infection. Our dentist will administer local anesthesia to the gums and jaw at the beginning of the procedure to ensure that you feel little to no pain. Sometimes, patients may receive general anesthesia if the process is more invasive.
After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort and pain for a few days. However, our dentist can prescribe pain relievers and antibiotics to help treat it and help the site heal.
Reasons for Performing a Tooth Extraction
Severe Tooth Decay
When tooth decay progresses to an advanced stage, it can severely damage the tooth structure, including the enamel, dentin, and pulp. Extraction may be necessary if the decay is extensive, compromises the tooth's functionality, or poses a risk of infection.
Advanced Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can destroy the supporting tissues and bones around the teeth. Extraction may be required if periodontal disease reaches an advanced stage, leading to significant tooth loosening or loss of bone support.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, often don't have enough space to emerge or developcorrectly in the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infections, crowding, and damage to adjacent teeth. In such cases, extraction is a standard solution.
Orthodontic Treatment
In orthodontics, tooth extractions may be necessary as part of the treatment plan to address overcrowding. Removing one or more teeth can create the space needed to align the remaining teeth properly.
The Tooth Extraction Procedure
To ensure your comfort during the procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth being extracted. The dentist will use specialized instruments, such as an elevator or forceps, to gently loosen the tooth from its socket. They will apply controlled pressure and use rocking motions to widen the socket and separate the tooth from the surrounding tissues.
Once the tooth is sufficiently loosened, the dentist carefully and slowly extracts it from the socket. Sometimes, the tooth must be divided into sections for easier removal, particularly if it's impacted or has complex roots. After the tooth is removed, the dentist will clean the extraction site. They may use a sterile saline solution to flush out debris or bacteria and smooth the socket's edges.
After the extraction, the dentist will provide instructions on caring for the extraction site to promote healing and minimize discomfort or complications.
